We’re Pregnant!

We’re pregnant!….

I love how us men say this but it’s the woman who has to go through it.. Really guys let’s be honest; we have it pretty easy.

Anyway…

Excited, nervous, over the moon.. A few words to describe the feeling that I and I imagine all men who actually want to have a baby in the first place and who have not stupidly made a girl pregnant because they either have no respect or no clue on the implications of not being a ‘dad’ when it comes to the crunch, will have, not on them but to the mother and child. Strong views from me because there are TOO MANY MEN out there who don’t think about the affect them not being a real father when they mess up and impregnate a girl has on THE CHILD! I’m sure I’ll write another blog about the meaning of the word ‘father’ one day :)

Moving off my high horse and onto to better things…

There will be another member of the little miss scrabbled family joining us around the 2nd April 2015. Lots to do and plan family wise and work wise but after the problems we’ve had which I won’t go into detail about , we are so happy about the news.

But what will that mean for our family.. Well I bet most of you in this position start to think the same way.

The personal stuff

  1. The house is too small?
  2. Where can we move to?
  3. Can we afford the bigger mortgage?
  4. What are all of our options?
  5. Is the car big enough? (yes to that.. We have a Renault scenic and it’s a great size).
  6. What about Heavanie and her college? We can’t move too far away yet.. Till she finishes.. 2014-09-24 14.52.58

The family business stuff

Who will write the plaques? Sam currently does all the writing..

How are we going to cope with the addition to the family and the initial stages after the new baby comes into the world?

On this front, I hope that we are in control because we have been planning this for a while. Our business plan, believe it or not outlined the new baby in the plan, along with how we cope with the addition.

Here’s what we plan to do:

We are currently looking for an apprentice who will shadow me and Sam. They will take on the preparation and completion phases of the orders so, preparing the plaques with paint, painting the embellishments etc.

e66991f6ced9bca515d9f9a364531333264c8ba0

Christine, our admin girl who has worked with me for years doing 15 odd hrs a week will help us a little more with thingssuch as…

  • Mapping out the daily orders
  • Getting the labels ready for print
  • Communication with the clients / customers.

So there we have it .. The countdown begins

Feel free to follow our journey pregnancy as we ‘countdown the weeks ’till baby Matthew is born’ 2014-10-01 17.11.13

A Good Old Healthy Morning – ‘dads advice …. food for babies’

A quick question before I get into this next blog post. Do you like eating the same thing every single morning for breakfast? If yes ..fair enough, however for your child, who is experiencing every food type for the first time, do you want them to be doing the same?

Is this really the way forward, especially with the range of foods we now have on our doorstep? Will they get the right nutrients during the most important meal of the day?

The thing is, children need variety. You should always mix up and change what they eat. How food is presented to children is important and home cooking – well.. This needs to be learned and practiced. The human body is like a machine.. It needs quality fuel to allow it to function well and grow well. Children are growing daily and the fuel we give to them will feed them the proper nutrients to help their bodies develop.

A few things that I have picked up … Well to be honest I did this myself because I love to cook….

Make meals yourself don’t buy packets when you don’t know where the ingredients come from.

I’m not saying that I’ve never bought a jar of food from the supermarket because I have but for that emergency moment when time is not on your side.

Fresh Melon Chunks

Fresh Melon chunks

This is what I tend to do of a morning.. Do any of you mums and dads do the same?

  • Split the breakfast into mini courses
Chopped grapes

Chopped grapes

Chopped Bananas

Chopped Bananas

  • Create little sections of food like mini tapas
  • Always have a carbohydrate serving such as porridge, weetabix etc.
  • Talk to your child during breakfast. I had to really push myself to do this part because it didn’t come naturally. Build in the family time here.

I want to hear from you guys.. Is there a right or wrong way here? What do think is the best food source for your children in the morning and do they want to eat it?

I’m not a nutritionist either ..I just love food.

Tips for cutting up a Banana (Remember my child was 13 months when I started this if not a little younger)

Cut the Banana in Half

2014-08-30 14.42.38

Then in Half Again but length ways

2014-08-30 14.43.06

Slice along the centre line of each half

2014-08-30 14.44.12

Make deep cuts across the banana so that the knife also scores the skin at the bottom

2014-08-30 14.44.54

All you need to do now is turn the banana upside down and squeeze gently so the segments pop out.

Tips for cutting up your melon (My child was 15 months when I started this with the melon – I aired on the side of caution because of the risk of choking)

Again cut your melon in half

2014-08-30 14.46.34

Then in half again

2014-08-30 14.48.18

Then Cut along the melon and across the melon with deep cuts through to the skin but not completely through, so as to make another section.2014-08-30 14.48.32 2014-08-30 14.48.54

2014-08-30 14.49.39

Use a Sharp knife and slide it along the bottom of the melon and you will see the little segments fall off. I tend to stick to the darker line just before the Skin area. It’s like cutting up a piece of fish.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE BREAKFAST A FUN LEARNING TIME FOR YOUR CHILD…..?

———–

You can also check out this website for tips and guidance on feeding your young ones..But ….you will need to spend 5 minutes reading and I would suggest making one change to your preparation at a time.. http://kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_center/healthy_eating/breakfast.html

And more ‘dads advice food for babies’….

Here are some more of the basics taken from http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/eating_breakfast.html

  • Make breakfast a time to sit and eat with your kids. Being a good example is a powerful way to change their habits.
  • If your child says he’s not hungry in the morning, try making a healthy smoothie, with milk, yoghurt and a piece of fruit such as a banana, instead of a more traditional breakfast ‘meal’.
  • Another option is for your child to eat a small meal at home, such as a small bowl of oats or a piece of fruit. You can then give your child a healthy snack to eat before school starts – for example, a sandwich or some natural yoghurt with fruit.
  • If a hectic morning schedule gets in the way of breakfast, try setting your child’s alarm 10 minutes earlier, or packing your child’s bag and laying out her clothes the night before. You could even get the next day’s breakfast ready the night before – try putting dry oats in a covered bowl, or placing toppings like sliced fruit, nuts or raisins in a muffin tray.
  • Fussy eaters often respond better at mealtimes if the food is more interesting than usual. Young children love toast or fruit, and older kids can occasionally prefer ‘non-breakfast’ foods, like leftover pasta.
  • Older children and teenagers might refuse to eat breakfast as a way of showing their independence. Try not to make a big deal about this. You could suggest your child takes a piece of fruit or a healthy smoothie made with milk, yoghurt and fruit to have on the trip to school instead. Your child might also like to choose his own healthy breakfast options when out shopping.

Space saver plaques for your home

We thought about writing this blog after talking to some of our customers who mentioned that ‘it would be worth looking into decorative plaques that could be put up onto the fridge’. Our first thought was – what a great Space Saver idea! So we made 1 – launched it and people love them.

Countdown plaques for the fridge

What makes these Fridge Magnet Plaques a nice addition to the kitchen is you can update the chalkboard as you are making breakfast, making dinner or making a cup of tea. Everybody passes the fridge and goes Into the kitchen throughout the day so it’s a perfect place to put a countdown plaque. Think up and coming weddings, a pregnancy gift, a holiday that you have been looking forward to because it’s the kids first time on an aeroplane. There are loads of things you can countdown to which will add more excitement and fun for the whole family. AND which make a fantastic original and personal gift!

Preparation of the plaques

At LittleMissScrabbled.co.uk we make each and every plaque from scratch. And we have a wee system or production line for want of a better word…

We use a local tradesman to cut the MDF sheets into 6” by 3“ plaque pieces

20140911_135003

I paint each plaque with the base colour

2014-09-11 13.49.43

Sam adds the all the embellishments

2014-05-31 22.33.57-2

Next up is the writing on each plaque and Sam is the talented one here. She customises each and every plaque to the meet the needs of our customers.

Here are some examples of the Plaques on the Fridge

You have to use your imagination and if there is something that you want I bet you we can make it for you. Just ask…

The ideal personalised gift

So if you’re thinking of that one gift that you’ve been meaning to get your friend, husband, partner? Here’s more Plaque themes that could make ideal Fridge Magnets:

  • Days until our Family Holiday
  • Weeks till our baby arrives
  • Weeks and days ‘till our wedding day
  • Countdown to Christmas Day

Gift Plaque UK

1st Crafts Blog Post! 1st time blogging! 1st time running a family business!

Hi Everyone

Welcome to my crafts blog.  Well I say that, but this will be much more than that if i’m honest. We will have blogs on Daddy Advice when bringing up children / Food for the Family and more.. However, I must say 4 words from the very off… “I am very nervous!”. Not sure why, but writing and me does not always go – However talking does, so this blog will be me ‘talking’ about the days in the life of littlemissscrabbled.co.uk.Crafts Blog post imageWe are Kevin and Sam who started the ‘now’ company back in February 2014 by complete chance. I’ll get to the what happened in a wee bit, but first..

I am a former PE teacher who still does a few days a month ‘Supply Teaching’ in Primary and Secondary Schools to keep my hand in and earn some extra money.  Also worth noting, a wee sideline I have done for years is teaching fitness classes –  like boot camp, body combat and body pump. I do love it and it will always be a passion of mine.

In fact, I recently started a buggy club for mums at a local Children’s Centre. This gives me time with Eddison (my 16month old son) and involves music exercise and the kids running around daft.

buggy club picture - Blog post 1

Sam my other half (the better half) has worked in the health business as well, in Administration for years and stopped just over a year ago when she had Eddison. Sam is the logical one out of the two of us. I am the scatty one who thinks and thinks and thinks of new ideas, then gets frustrated because I have started none of them. Sam helps me channel this and so far this has made the business a big success in the early days..This brings me on to the beginning of the life of littlemissscrabbled.co.uk and why I am starting this blog.

Why am I blogging?

Having a 16year old and a 1year old takes it’s toll, but working from home at the same time is another story. When things were bad, financially bad I mean, we seriously did not have a clue how to get back on the  road and start breaking even again. We were in debt and my other business was not working and had not taken off the way I thought it would have. On top of that there was the breaded onset of worry and stress.

2014-07-09 19.46.20

A wee story…

What changed was this….Mum came to stay (she still lives in Scotland with the rest of my family) and we got talking about her business. She and her partner have been extremely successful in the card making industry on Ebay and Amazon, selling up to 50 cards daily. Here’s an example of the type of thing she does – HANDMADE CARDS BY VEE. We looked at their model and thought why not.. Let’s give it a go. So we started. Designed a few plaques. Sourced materials (on Ebay) and bought 10 of everything we needed. [one of the lessons I learned through mistakes, is start really small.. Test the water, as they say]. I hate doing this because it’s not in my nature but I didn’t have a choice.. We had no money!

We put them on Ebay and Amazon and they sold.. We added more.. . And they sold. 6 months in and we are still selling and more importantly growing.. Which is also the perfect time to start blogging and take everyone on our journey.

2014-07-20 15.03.43

What I’ll be blogging about..

This blog will talk about 2 areas for the moment:

  1. Working from home  and the pros and cons of having a young family when trying to grow your home based business
  2. Food for the family- what we eat and what we feed Eddison as he grows up.
